About

Talking about Art Nouveau and its popularity in Riga, one can't help but think of the famous House with Masks, a prime example of expressiveness and the swift flight of human imagination. This renowned house is located on Elizabeth Street, and it was brought to life by the architect Eisenstein.

The House with Masks might inadvertently frighten the overly sensitive, as its composition is extraordinarily vivid and realistic. The facade of the building is crowned with two female faces with snakes on their heads, and between them, as if caught in invisible vice, a male mask screams in terror. Above the balcony doors, large owls with eyes that resemble blooming flowers and wings that seem about to flap and cause a commotion, stand frozen.
