About

Notre-Dame de la Chapelle Church is considered the oldest not only in Brussels but also in all of Belgium. It is located not far from the main square Grand Place, having taken its rightful place there as far back as the twelfth century.

The church has endured numerous fires, destructions, and even lootings, but has nevertheless stood firm and today serves as an official landmark of the capital's architecture. Notre-Dame de la Chapelle is also known as the Chapel of the Holy Virgin Mary, in tribute to the duke who funded its construction. Both the exterior and interior styles of the building are closely intertwined with Romanesque Gothic. The top of the building is adorned with a belfry, which during particularly significant Catholic holidays fills the area with its deep ringing.

Passed by a couple of times and it was closed. Finally got inside and it was worth the wait. Some excellent stain glass windows, and a very exuberant pulpit.
