About

The Daugava Promenade is a favorite spot for walks not only among tourists but also among the residents of the capital. The calm surface of the water, the ripples of night lights, and the cobblestone underfoot only occasionally remind strollers of the long-gone days when the suspended silence was broken by the merry noise of Riga's port.

In its modern form, the promenade barely resembles its original purpose as a docking and unloading site for merchant ships in the 13th century. Before World War II, the port stretched for 40 kilometers, impressing with its scale. However, the entire area was completely destroyed by the Germans and was only rebuilt after the war ended, becoming the Daugava Promenade known to tourists and locals. Several bridges have been thrown across the river, whose name translates as "big water," connecting to the new part of Riga.
