About

Absorbing all the beauty and charm of the Latvian capital, the Town Hall Square has become the unofficial center of the "Riga universe," especially popular among tourists. However, the square was not always known as the Town Hall Square - there used to be a market here, and instead of tourists, merchants hustling with exotic food and fish sellers were everywhere.

Today's Town Hall Square is an architectural "cocktail" consisting of the House of the Blackheads, the Museum dedicated to the days of German occupation, and the very town hall that "shared" its name. At the center of the square, surrounded by black lanterns like a silent guardian, stands the knight Roland. Once a year, his monument "comes to life" - this happens during the Christmas festivities when the fair, aromatic gingerbreads, and hot mulled wine prepared on a fire gather crowds of tourists and locals in the Town Hall Square.
