About

The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is often called the most controversial place in Riga, not only because of its daunting appearance but also because of the idea behind it, which may shock some socially-active visitors. There is no admission fee - everyone here is considered a guest who can donate any amount.

Once, another museum dedicated to the Latvian Riflemen stood in the place of the Occupation Museum. It is noteworthy that Lenin referred to them as "revolutionary bayonets" that implanted Bolshevism in Russia. The interior of the museum is painted in black and red, and the exhibition is almost entirely dedicated to the repressions of the Soviet and fascist regimes in Latvia. Posters, black and white photographs, postcards, documents, and flags eloquently testify to the lawlessness that prevailed during those terrifying times.
