About

The Statue of Roland, located in the very "heart" of Town Hall Square, not far from the famous House of the Blackheads, has long been a symbol of prosperity and well-being of the capital. According to ancient laws, such a monument allowed the inhabitants to administer justice and endowed the city with a range of powers.

The knight, with a calm and serene face, holds a sword and shield, the latter engraved with the coat of arms of Riga. Incidentally, this sculpture is the third in succession - its "predecessors," made of red wood and sandstone, did not withstand the test of time and had to be replaced. By the way, the Statue of Roland is considered the geometric center of Riga, and kilometers to the nearest European centers are measured from it. During the festival, the monument to the brave knight is decorated with flowers, and both tourists and locals take photos against its backdrop.
