About

Having undergone multiple restorations and significantly expanded, the church of San Nicola continues to be loved not only by the locals but also by tourists, just like many centuries ago. The facade of the church is adorned with pilasters and arches, and the pointed dome is topped with a neat cross. By the way, it is on the facade of the building where one can see an example of ancient wooden inlay.

Inside the church of San Nicola, there are many depictions of the Madonna with Child, frescoes of Saint Nicholas himself saving Pisa from the deadly plague, as well as numerous other canvases by famous Italian masters. The church passage is connected to the Torre de Cantone tower and the Palazzo delle Vedove - this was the path through which noble court ladies would enter the church, avoiding the courtyard and encounters with the common people.

Didn't visit the church itself, just stop by to see the inclination of the octagonal bell tower. Bell tower (from 12th century) is one of the three bell towers that has an inclination, after famous Pisa tower and another tower of the church outside the city - Chiesa San Michele degli Scalzi. The tower was once separated from the building and its base is under the street level now. Inclination is very mild but still visible, tilting is towards the street and river Arno.
