The Roman Catholic Parish of Saint Alexanders in Kyiv
About
The Roman Catholic Parish of Saint Alexanders in Kyiv, known as the Co-Cathedral of St. Alexander, stands as a resplendent testament to Neoclassical architecture with a touch of Classicism. Designed by esteemed architect Ludovico Stanzani, this striking church opened in 1842 after its initial construction phase began in 1817. It was originally erected to commemorate the visit of Tsar Alexander I. Surviving trials of history, the church was rebuilt post-fire in 1823 and intriguingly served as a planetarium during Soviet times. Today, with an impressive Google rating of 4.9, it continues to inspire awe with its elegant interior, highlighted by stunning green pillars that frame the altar and chapels. Visitors are welcomed with masses in a rich array of languages, including Ukrainian, Polish, Russian, English, and Latin, nurturing a vibrant and inclusive community spirit. St. Alexander Church also holds the honor of being the oldest surviving Catholic shrine in Kyiv and was blessed with a visit from Pope John Paul II in 2001, further cementing its cultural and spiritual significance. Each Sunday morning, it rings with the joy and peace of its English mass, embracing locals and visitors alike with heartwarming services.
