About

Kirillovskaya Church is a magnificent sanctuary, whose history dates back to the year 1139. At one time, it served as the family crypt for the Chernigov princes of the Olgovich dynasty. The initial architectural appearance of the building was in the Byzantine style. The fall of Kievan Rus brought with it repairs and reconstructions. After a fire in 1734, most of the church was rebuilt in the Ukrainian Baroque style. The interior decor also underwent changes. The frescoes that decorated the walls of the temple were almost completely destroyed by order of Catherine II. However, even today, the church remains a magnificent structure. Moreover, many of the church's icons were painted by the famous Russian artist Mikhail Vrubel.

Amazing atmosphere - more than 800 square meters of Vrubel paintings. This place is usually skipped by tourists because of not central location, but it is totally worth visiting! Go to Dorogozhychi metro (green line), then walk half an hour through Babyn Yar. I love to take my tour guests here, as well as exploring the quirky sculptures on the territory of the nearby clinic. Plan your time as the church is closing at 6 pm.
