About

One of the oldest monasteries in Kyiv is considered to be St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery. It is believed to be not only the first cathedral with gold-coated domes but also the prototype of this tradition. Throughout its existence, St. Michael's Cathedral has experienced various times: there have been both easy and hard periods. The foundation of the monastery is considered to be in 1108, and it was consecrated five years later. The cathedral got its name in honor of Kyiv's patron - Archangel Michael, and it is called Golden-Domed because of its dazzling domes. From the time of its complete destruction to the restoration works, the cathedral's mosaics and frescoes were kept not only in Kyiv but also in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. St. Michael's Cathedral (monastery) impresses everyone who sees it!
