St. Mark's Basilica is an outstanding creation of European architecture, where the styles of the East and West are intricately intertwined. Around 4,000 sq.m. of sparkling mosaics decorate the floors, walls, and domes of the church. The earliest examples date back to the 12th century, created with the help of Byzantine craftsmen. However, Venetian artisans quickly mastered this skilled technique and added a touch of European style to the interior. The main portal of the church is framed by Romanesque carved details, created 800 years ago. Among the most important relics housed here is the Pala d'Oro-an altarpiece consisting of enameled segments and studded with pearls, sapphires, rubies, and amethysts. The basilica even contains a museum, whose main exhibit is the bronze horses that were stolen and brought from Constantinople. Here, one can also see ancient tapestries and medieval manuscripts.
