There's a theory suggesting the name relates to the condemned individuals who, passing through the bridge, would sadly sigh and lament their fate. According to another interpretation, the sighs came not from prisoners but from lovers passing underneath the bridge in a boat. It also enjoys considerable popularity among famous painters who have sought to capture the bridge in their artworks.
