The Bridge of Sighs can be counted among the most famous Venetian landmarks. It was constructed at the very beginning of the 17th century, designed by the architect Antonio Contino. The bridge was built in the Baroque style using white limestone and features window openings with bars on them. This elegant structure spans over the Palace Canal, with the Doge's Palace on one side and the prison building on the other. There's a theory suggesting the name relates to the condemned individuals who, passing through the bridge, would sadly sigh and lament their fate. According to another interpretation, the sighs came not from prisoners but from lovers passing underneath the bridge in a boat. It also enjoys considerable popularity among famous painters who have sought to capture the bridge in their artworks.
