About
Burano Island is located about 7 km from Venice, and its population is around 3,000 people. In reality, Burano consists of four small islands, separated by canals no wider than 10 meters. A distinctive feature of this island is its small houses, each painted in a bright, cheerful color, setting it apart from other buildings. According to legend, each house was painted a different color so that men returning from fishing could recognize their own homes. The island is famous for its lace, crafted in a special technique using a fine needle. In the 18th century, this craft fell into decline due to the labor-intensive nature and low pay. It was only at the end of the 19th century, when a lace-making school was opened here, that the craft gradually began to revive. However, even today, there are very few artisans capable of creating such lace masterpieces.

Venice’s quirky little sister, Burano is a riot of color, like a box of crayons exploded and the locals just rolled with it. Originally painted bright so fishermen could spot their homes through the fog, now it’s mostly for Instagram. The lace-making tradition is legendary—just don’t ask how much that delicate doily costs unless you’re emotionally prepared. I chose to stay here for a night on top of a restaurant, the only accommodation option I can find and guess I’m the only tourist in town by night. By sunset, the day-trippers vanished, leaving me in a ghost town of rainbow houses and serene silence and a beautiful sunset. Great seafood, no crowds, and zero risk of getting run over by a gondola. Only downside? If you miss the ferry back, congratulations.. you live here now.
