About

The Church of Santa Maria e Donato is located on the main square of the island of Murano, known for its glass masterpieces. The cathedral is built in the Veneto-Byzantine style and was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary. When the relics of Saint Donatus, a bishop who defeated a dragon in the 4th century, were transferred here, the basilica was reconstructed and acquired its modern appearance. After that, it received its second dedication. The saint's relics are kept in a marble sarcophagus. Behind the altar, one can see four massive bones, which, according to legend, belong to that very dragon. A short distance from the cathedral stands a bell tower. Both structures are constructed from simple dark-red brick. What excites tourists the most is the basilica's mosaic floor - a true masterpiece depicting botanical motifs interspersed with figures of mythical animals.

Zeer mooie kerk langs buiten (vooral achterkant). Jammer dat de toegang niet gratis is.

Eine wunderschöne, alte Basilika auf Murano, der Insel der venezianischen Glaskunst, mit einem außerordentlich sehenswerten Mosaikboden und beeindruckenden Kircheninterieur.
