About

Santa Maria della Salute is a domed basilica in Venice, located at the mouth of the Grand Canal. It was constructed as an octagonal building, erected on 100,000 wooden piles. The architecture of the basilica is in the Baroque style, and its facade is adorned with magnificent sculptures, with its entrance resembling a triumphal arch. Inside, there's an altar which houses the famous icon of Madonna della Salute brought from Crete. The side chapels are frescoed by Titian and other Italian masters. White marble statues decorate the cornices and portals of the basilica, giving it a whimsically ornate appearance. It's no wonder that this site is a must-visit for every tourist who finds themselves in the city. The church was built in honor of the deliverance from the plague that ravaged Venice in the 17th century. To commemorate this significant event, at the end of every November, a bridge made of boats is constructed between the basilica and the opposite bank of the Grand Canal.
