About
The Venetian Arsenal is a large shipyard built back in the 12th century. For many centuries, it was a source of pride for Venice. One in every ten city residents worked here, primarily highly skilled specialists. Up to 20 galleys could be built at the shipyard simultaneously. At the beginning of the 13th century, due to the increased demand for warships, the Arsenal was reconstructed. In the middle of the 14th century, majestic gates reminiscent of triumphal arches and two towers flanking the water entrance were added to it. Over the next several centuries, it was repeatedly modernized and rebuilt. Currently, the Arsenal is closed to tourists as it requires reconstruction. However, no attempts at its repair have been made so far. Occasionally, various cultural events are held at the Arsenal.
