Santiago de Compostela

Start your city exploration with a visit to the Cathedral - the final point of the most famous pilgrimage route in southern Europe. Every day at noon, a mass is held for pilgrims. On St. James' Day (July 25th) and other festive days, you can witness the giant censer in action. In the Cathedral, be sure to descend to the crypt to see the relics of Saint James and enjoy views of the Old Town from the roof. For photos with the Cathedral as a backdrop, head to one of the many viewing platforms located on the surrounding hills.

Take a stroll through the UNESCO-protected historic center. Admire the beauty of the Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles of monasteries and temples. Visit the Museo das Peregrinacións and the Mercado de Abastos market pavilions. Try the Galician octopus, pulpo á feira, and the almond Tarta de Santiago. In the evening, enjoy street concerts or join friends on the De Viños route.

Santiago de Compostela boasts five million square meters of gardens and parks. Admire the sculptures in Parque da Alameda, one of the best venues for festivals and concerts. Relax in the shade of the oak trees in Parque de San Domingos de Bonaval. Nearby, you'll find the Galician Center of Contemporary Art CGAC and the Museo do Pobo Galego. A walk through the futuristic complex of Cidade da Cultura de Galicia is also a popular attraction for tourists.
