Bilbao

A cosmopolitan city in northern Spain. The unique facade of the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum is crafted from 35,000 titanium plates. Visitors are greeted by the spider sculpture Maman and the Flower Puppy. The museum's exhibitions are constantly changing, with the exception of the grand labyrinth installation, The Matter of Time.

The historic Siete Calles center is perfect for pleasant strolls along narrow streets and stunning photos in front of the Gothic Santiago Cathedral and the arches of the Church of Saint Anthony. Be sure to try the popular sparkling wine of the Basque Country, txakoli, and the Basque-style tapas variations called pintxo. In each of the 64 arches on the main city square, Plaza Nueva, there are cafes and restaurants. The gastro bars at Mercado de la Ribera, located on the banks of the Nervion River, are popular with tourists.

For shopping, head to Gran Via near the Abando metro station. Shops and malls are housed in elegant mansions and modern complexes. Rest can be taken at the beautiful Moyúa Square. After exploring the Museum of Art’s collection, stroll through the park to the famous La Pergola by the musical fountain.

The best view of the river, as well as the old and new quarters of Bilbao, is from Mirador de Artxanda. You can ascend the mountain on foot or by cable car. To see Begoñako Basilica, you will need to conquer 213 steps or take the elevator.
