Burgos

This ancient city of Castile and León captivates everyone exploring Spain along the routes of Camino del Cid and Camino de Santiago. In the center of Burgos, there is a unique 13th-century Gothic cathedral, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Inside, you'll find the tomb of the legendary El Cid and his wife Jimena.

Walk through the grand Arco de Santa María to the bridge over the river, relax in the riverside park. Then, head out to explore the numerous squares and streets of the historic center. On the opposite side of the river are the Burgos Museum and the Museum of Human Evolution (the core of its exhibit is archaeological finds from the Atapuerca paleontological site).

From the city, you can take an excursion to Paleolítico Vivo - a vast area with bison that recreates the ecosystem of the Upper Paleolithic era.

A stunning panorama of Burgos can be seen from the height of Mirador Del Castillo. Behind the high castle walls, you can see the famous Pozo del Castillo well, which is 63 meters deep. There are 335 steps leading to the well's bottom, which is connected to a system of subterranean trap galleries.

While visiting Burgos, stop by El Monasterio de las Huelgas: a grand medieval complex of monasteries with chapels, cathedrals, churches, and tombs of Castilian kings.
