About

The abbey of Saint Peter, erected on the remains of a Romanesque church, has undergone numerous reconstructions before it became a center of cultural and religious life. It was here that the first university of Salzburg was founded, and within the monastery walls, the crescendoing hum of Benedictine monk voices can still be heard. The interior is decorated in the Rococo style, adorned with frescoes and pristine white columns. Tourists have access to the early Christian catacombs in Mount Mönchsberg, the local cemetery, and the relics of Saint Rupert. Additionally, the local shop always sells fortified monastery wine, bread, and a variety of ecclesiastical utensils.
