Sculpture of Conscience Cloak in Salzburg
About
Under the southern arches of the Cathedral, bending almost to the ground, hides its face a sculpture known as "The Cloak of Conscience". Truth be told, there's no face beneath the bronze cloak, and this fact unnerves even the most seasoned tourists. From a distance, it might seem that a woman is hiding under the hood, but in reality, the sculpture is dedicated to the Commander who killed Don Juan, thus restoring the city's virtuous balance. Interestingly, a sculpture of similar popularity and bearing the same name, but in Czech, is also located in Prague.

In Salzburg, beneath the southern archway of the Salzburg Cathedral, stands Anna Chromy's evocative sculpture known as the "Pietà," also referred to as the "Cloak of Conscience" or "Coat of Peace." Installed in 2003, this hollow, hooded cloak—absent of a visible figure—invites contemplation on themes of absence, memory, and the human spirit. Its faceless form allows viewers to project their interpretations, seeing it as a symbol of death, conscience, or an eternal presence . The "Pietà" is part of Chromy's broader "Cloak of Conscience" series, inspired by her 1980 painting "To Be or Not To Be," which drew from Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s play "Jedermann" and Mozart’s opera "Don Giovanni." This series features similar cloaked figures in various locations, including Prague, Monaco, and Athens . Anna Chromy (1940–2021), a Czech-German artist, transitioned from painting to sculpture following a life-altering accident in 1992. Her works often explore spiritual and philosophical themes, aiming to evoke introspection and universal human experiences . Today, the "Pietà" remains one of Salzburg’s most photographed and discussed public artworks, resonating with visitors through its mysterious and contemplative presence.
