2025 Museums

Exactly 120 meters above sea level and holding the title of one of the largest fortresses in all of Europe, Hohensalzburg Fortress was built on the Festungsberg rock and from its very first days, welcomed the local elite of clergy into its countless halls. The fortress has survived a single siege and bravely held its ground, but years later, it still opened its heavy gates to tourists, who arrive by funicular, with the most daring making the ascent on foot. The Recturm Tower, located at the very corner of the fortress and surrounded by a whole armada of cannons, once served as a dungeon and still retains a real torture chamber to this day. Visitors to Hohensalzburg will also find it interesting to visit the military museum and the famous Golden Room with its exquisite decorations.
