About

Time holds power not only over humans but also over stone. The Church of Saint John, through centuries, has undergone many metamorphoses, becoming a unique architectural structure that combines not only Gothic and Baroque elements but also Mannerism and some traits of the Renaissance era.

The Church of Saint John is located near the Daugava River at the most traversed part of Skarnu street. Adjacent to the church is the Johannine courtyard with fragments of ancient fortification structures. This sanctuary, erected in honor of Saint John, today gathers lovers of organ music within its walls-concerts are frequently held here. The external appearance of the church is adorned with a statue of Salome in a special niche, as well as two stone masks with open mouths. The latter are installed in honor of the monks who sacrificed themselves for the future greatness of the place.
