About

The Cathedral of St. James, despite its compact size, is considered the main Catholic church in all of Latvia. After numerous renovations and reconstructions, the church has acquired its final appearance, becoming a true example of brick Gothic architecture.

Today, the Cathedral of St. James is a basilica, consisting of three naves with a "rectangular" altar. The pulpit, made of expensive red wood with floral patterns and arabesques, deserves special attention. Also noteworthy is the large number of stained-glass windows, which extensively use the theme of grapevines. The Cathedral of St. James can be found in the Central District of the capital on Ekaba Street, identifiable by its tall spire with a brass rooster weathervane.

A igreja foi construída em 1225. No início do século XV, a Capela da Santa Cruz foi construída na extremidade da igreja. Em 1522, durante a Reforma Protestante, o edifício tornou-se a segunda igreja luterana de língua alemã em Riga.
