About

The Salaspils Memorial Ensemble serves as an eternal reminder of the horrors of the fascist regime, whose machinery ground up countless Latvian citizens. The "Path of Suffering" with its statues and monuments is visited annually by many tourists and residents of Riga, who carry the heavy cross of memory of those days.

The main feature of the memorial is that beneath the massive concrete slabs lies soil from several dozen concentration camps that operated in Latvia. The mournful architectural ensemble consists of a large wall of concrete with a narrow passage, through which each visitor enters a field, encircled by birches and pines. Here, seven sculptures proudly stand their timeless vigil, symbolizing the innocent victims of the occupation.
