About
Once, the Caravan Palace was home to the genuine "headquarters" of medieval knights belonging to the Order of St. Stephen. Today, within its sturdy walls, the higher education institution Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa is located, housed in former barracks and classrooms.
The facade of the building is adorned with a series of allegorical figures and sculptures, which seem to jest at "every entrant." The space between the windows is enhanced with lithographs of zodiac signs, designed more than six centuries ago. A double-sided staircase with marble railings and miniature columns leads to the main entrance. Tourists visit the Caravan Palace only during off-hours on tours, which detail the history of the structure.
