La Conciergerie in Paris
About
It's hard to imagine that this majestic castle, seeming as if lifted straight from the pages of knightly novels, once served as a prison. Each tower of the building is enveloped in its own history and halo of legends. The variety of dungeons and their purposes is nothing short of astounding. The Conciergerie cannot be fully explored in five minutes, nor even in several hours. This castle is rife with secrets and intrigues. The cells of the structure once held such notable figures as Marie Antoinette, Émile Zola, and Mata Hari. For fifteen centuries now, this castle has towered over the Seine, initially safeguarding the peace of kings, and later, the secrets of prisoners.
