About

This quite fascinating attraction of Krakow, built at the end of the fifteenth century, served an exclusively defensive function. Essentially, it was the main defensive structure, astonishing with its impregnability: to enter the city, it was necessary to cross a drawbridge 24 meters long and a covered passage, which connected the Barbican with the Florian Gates. With stone walls three meters thick, one hundred thirty embrasures, and seven observation towers, the Krakow Barbican is one of only three such structures that have survived to the present day. Although the city's natives somewhat disrespectfully refer to this landmark as "the pot," they are nevertheless proud of it and its martial past. The Barbican is open from April to October, during which time various events are often held.
