About

In Fő Square, there stands a scandalous yet unusual sculpture known as "The Waiting," dedicated to love priestesses or, simply put, workers of the oldest profession. The composer of this piece was the renowned sculptor Imre Varga, who repeatedly visited the Hungarian government in hopes of obtaining permission to erect this monument.

"The Waiting" features four bronze-casted prostitutes, each of a different nationality. A Frenchwoman, a Hungarian, an Englishwoman, and a German shyly look around in search of a tardy client, shielding themselves from the rain with umbrellas all year round. Surrounding the sculpture are flower beds, and between the bronze women stands a lamppost, seemingly reminiscent of the world-famous Red Light District.
