Gellért Church in Budapest
About
The Gellért Church, located in a cave of the hill with the same name, was constructed by the hands of Pauline monks. Since the foundation of the church, the "owners" of the cave have frequently changed, with the monks being replaced by poor families and later even by hermits.
The Gellért Church, or as it is also called, the "cave sanctuary," is not used for its original purposes. Today, the dark interior of the cave houses an active museum that tourists love to visit. Its exhibition features a multitude of historical objects that have survived wars and maintained their original appearance through the passage of time.

I first visited this unusual chapel cut into the rock in 2018 with a friend, and recently took my husband to see it on a return visit to Budapest. The man at the ticket counter was very pleasant and the entry price is reasonable and includes an audio guide. It's an interesting place to visit because it's entirely built in the rock of the Gellert Hill and is fairly easy to get to, especially if you use the hop on hop off bus.
