About

Just a kilometer south of Ezelpoort, you'll find the Smedenpoort gates situated on a bridge across the river. The building's "fresh" yellowish-green color beautifully harmonizes with its unique architectural choices and sloping roof, topped by a small turret with an ancient bell.

The Smedenpoort gates have their own unique history, tracing back to the year 1691. Bruges was saved from the French by a sailor who revealed a betrayal and a planned assault. The conspirators were executed, and in memory of those turbulent times, a bronze skull was placed above the main arch.
