About

During the times of the Crusades, women often lost their husbands, were deprived of guardianship and support, and afterwards, they would make their way to the settlement known as "Beguinage." Located on the southwestern outskirts of Bruges, "Beguinage," alas, has not retained its former beauty and variety of architectural forms that it once gleamed with.

Today, within the territory of the settlement, among the miniature and low-rise dwellings for the beguines, the Church of Saint Catherine stands proudly. There, walking along a cobblestone path, one can reach the house of the prioress, bypassing the expansive courtyard of the monastery. "Beguinage" serves as a significant landmark of the city, where one can see local inhabitants who wish to escape from the urban noise and hustle.
