About

The Potemkin Stairs, just as unique, interesting, and iconic a symbol of Odessa as, for example, the French Eiffel Tower or the Italian Leaning Tower of Pisa. Its construction began in the 1840s, according to the design of three renowned architects - A. Melnikov, F. Boffo, and Potie.

According to its creators' intention, the Potemkin Stairs was meant to serve as a sort of connecting link between the sea and the sky. Indeed, if one looks upwards from the bottom platform of the stairs, aside from the monument to Duke Richelieu and two semi-circular structures, one's gaze immediately meets the vast expanse of the sky. In turn, the raging waves of the Black Sea can be observed by looking down from the top steps.

Nowadays, the Potemkin Stairs is a favorite spot for locals and visitors of the city to spend their time. Here, people organize lively celebrations, fun competitions, and festive concerts. Also, it's very common for people on the Potemkin Stairs to try and count the number of steps. Do you know how many there are?
