Arguably, this cathedral is one of the most renowned and oldest in Kyiv, and indeed in Ukraine as a whole. It is located on a square of the same name, in the center of the city, and rightfully considered to be a true monument of Ukrainian architecture and painting from the 11th-18th centuries. Various chronicles name different founding dates for the Saint Sophia Cathedral, but they agree on one thing: its centuries-old history is rich with destructions and repairs, looting, and enemy raids. The hallmark of this monument are the mosaics and frescoes dating back to the eleventh century. During the reconstruction in the century before last, the frescoes were restored, and later it was discovered that other images had been preserved under plaster and oil paints, which were immediately made accessible to visitors wherever possible. Also, this cathedral is famous for its necropolis, the burials of which span nearly a thousand years (1054-1995).
