The first official mentions of the Venice Carnival date back to 1094. Without exaggeration, it can be said that this is one of the most colorful and popular festivals in Europe and the world. Bright costumes, an air of mystery, balls, parades, and non-stop fun - this is the city's main celebration. This is the Venice Carnival.
There was a time when the carnival wasn't experiencing its best years, but in the last few decades, its popularity has become hard to overestimate. Hundreds of thousands of tourists come annually to see the vibrant festival. If you also dream of being at this event, enjoying the atmosphere of the city on water, and taking a look at the attractions of Venice, then you'll need to prepare well for this event to ensure you leave with only good memories.
Brief Program
The carnival in 2018 will take place from January 27 to February 13. The opening ceremony happens in St. Mark's Square. The carnival kicks off with a paper dove being launched from the bell tower of St. Mark's Cathedral, showering the square with sparkling confetti as it flies. If you want to get under this colorful "rain," we recommend arriving early at the square and finding a good spot under the bell tower.
During the two weeks, countless balls and costume parties take place in palaces and mansions throughout Venice. Many of these events are private, but there are also balls where you can buy an invitation ticket.
If you don't plan to attend such parties, don't worry, as there are plenty of interesting events happening on the streets of the city:
- On January 28, a water costume parade is planned in the Grand Canal area;
- On February 3, the best carnival costume will be chosen at St. Mark's Square;
- On February 4, the traditional "Flight of the Angel" will take place over St. Mark's Square.
Residents and guests of Venice can also look forward to endless costume parades, street festivities, fairs, and concerts. The festival traditionally closes on the last day before the Easter fast. The ringing of bells marks the end of the carnival and the beginning of Lent.
You can study the detailed carnival schedule and choose the most interesting events for yourself on the festival's official website.
Where to Stay?
To be at the center of all the action, we recommend choosing accommodation within walking distance from St. Mark's - the main square of Venice. Of course, rooms in such hotels are booked very quickly, so it's better to book a room a couple of months in advance.
When choosing accommodation in the city center, keep in mind that it will be noisy and crowded almost around the clock. If you prefer peace and tranquility, we recommend opting for hotels on the outskirts of the city. This way, you can control when you want to venture into the heart of Venice.
How to Save Money?
It's no secret that the Venetian carnival is the best time for local hotel owners, restaurateurs, and any other entrepreneur associated with the festival. If you're planning a budget trip, we have a few tips on how to save money in Venice.
The most expensive days are the opening and closing days of the festival. Therefore, if your goal is just to see the colorful events on the streets of Venice, plan your trip for a few days in the middle of the festival.
We also recommend booking your hotel in Venice in advance by choosing a suitable option on the InTravel portal. Don't count on finding a room upon arrival. If there are any rooms left in the city during the carnival, their prices will be several times higher than usual.
It's better to look for restaurants for lunch and dinner in remote residential areas, where tourists are rare. This way, the chances of enjoying delicious Italian dishes at a moderate price increase considerably. If you want to visit a specific establishment, reserve a table in advance.
Carnival Costume
To feel like a medieval noble, an elegant aristocrat, or a simple jester, a masquerade costume will help. Finding a suitable outfit for rent may not be easy, so carnival regulars recommend bringing your costume with you and completing it with a bright mask that you can buy in Venice.
Carnival masks are sold on every corner. You can purchase an inexpensive mask from a street vendor for an average of 5-15 euros. However, if you want to take home an exclusive handmade and high-quality mask, you'll need to spend at least 100 euros.
When buying a ticket to one of the private parties, carefully study the invitation, which specifies the theme of the ball and the recommended dress code.
Traveling with Children
It's important to understand that the Venetian carnival attracts a large number of tourists, and the city center, where the main events take place, consists of narrow ancient streets and canals. During the festival, it's quite difficult to avoid crowds. It's better not to come to the carnival with small children, especially infants who need to be pushed in a stroller.
And finally, experienced travelers do not recommend planning your first visit to Venice during the carnival. Due to the large number of guests, you won't be able to fully enjoy the local architecture and attractions. It's better to visit Venice for the first time in spring or summer and then, on your next visit, enjoy the bright and unforgettable carnival.
