Europe's top fairs to visit this winter

Europe's top fairs to visit this winter

Christmas and New Year's are the most magical and eagerly awaited holidays around the world. Each continent has its own Christmas traditions and customs. In Europe, Christmas is imbued with the spicy scent of warm mulled wine and gingerbread, adorned with colorful garlands, and filled with the sounds of jingle bells and chimes. The festive atmosphere can be felt in both European capitals and small tourist towns, with Christmas markets traditionally serving as the centers of celebration.

Prague

Prague is a large city and the capital of the Czech Republic, hence several Christmas markets are organized here to ensure that all residents and guests can fully participate in the festivities.

All the main events unfold at Old Town Square. This is where the main city Christmas tree is set up and a grand festive market is arranged. The Old Town Square market starts its operation on November 26, 2016, and lasts until January 1, 2017. It's incredibly easy to find since it's the most touristy spot next to the Old Town Hall, St. Nicholas Church, and the Jan Hus monument. The ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree lights takes place in the square on December 1. The entire market and the square are decorated with compositions dedicated to the Nativity, corners with live biblical animals (sheep, goats), and other thematic items.

Another vibrant market takes place at Wenceslas Square near the Koruna Palace and the National Museum. The market stalls come alive on November 26, 2016, and will operate until January 3, 2017. One of the brightest events of the market is the street procession in honor of St. Nicholas' Day.

As you can see, the fairs in the Czech Republic start their operation already in the last days of November, so if you're planning to visit a festive event, you should purchase flight tickets to Prague in advance while they are still available.

Budapest

Christmas in Budapest is cherished no less than in other European capitals, hence the markets here are colorful, magical, and unforgettable. To immerse yourself in a winter fairy tale, you need to buy a flight ticket to Budapest and visit the most characteristic market of the city at Vörösmarty Square, where the statue of the poet Mihály Vörösmarty is located. From November 27 until January 1, the market will delight tourists and locals alike with delicious street food and a variety of handmade souvenirs. Here, more than anywhere, you can feel the entire Hungarian character, try dishes of national cuisine, and warm up with hot drinks.

It was in Vienna where the first Christmas markets were held, so imagining Christmas in Europe without visiting this city is simply impossible. Book flight tickets to Vienna, wear warm hats and mittens, and prepare for long walks in the fresh air since visiting all the local markets can't be done in just one weekend.

Every year, a Christmas Bazaar of the Christ Child appears near the City Hall, featuring one hundred and fifty trading booths with souvenirs, toys, sweets, drinks, gifts. The market operates from November 11 until December 26, 2016. Be sure to visit the Christmas village at Maria-Theresien-Platz. Trading rows are nestled between the Art History Museum and the Natural History Museum. The market opens on November 16 and brings festive cheer until December 26. From December 27 to December 31, a Pre-New Year's fair takes place. You can also head to the Old Viennese Christmas Market on Freyung street. This place has hosted markets since 1772. The market operates from November 18 until December 23, 2016.

This enchanting city, where playful gnomes live right on the streets, becomes even more magical with the advent of Christmas. A traditional market will be held at the Market Square from November 18 until December 22, 2016, featuring a rich entertainment program and a wide variety of delicious treats and colorful gifts.
