Old Povonzki Cemetery in Warsaw
About
The Old Povonzki Cemetery was opened in 1790. Today, this place is a monument of architectural art, a sculpture museum, and a "repository" of Poland's historical past. The final resting place of prominent cultural figures and famous politicians has long been under constant state protection. A portion of the cemetery is dedicated to the burials of heroes and victims of the wars of the 19th and 20th centuries. On November 1st of every year, a fundraising event is held for the reconstruction and beautification of this place. Famous athletes, representatives of theater and cinema contribute their share, while ordinary people enjoy the rare opportunity to interact closely with their "screen" favorites. By the way, the area of the cemetery is exactly equal to the area of the Vatican itself, and its territory could potentially hold 1 million people.
