About

One of the largest and oldest districts has plenty to boast about to the modern tourist: Antakalnis has its own attractions, forests, establishments, and architectural monuments.

In the district, you can find dozens of universities, hospitals, palaces, and even the Lithuanian film studio, but the most mesmerizing place is Antakalnis Cemetery, which resembles more of a memorial park: it's always filled with visitors, and the graves are decorated with flowers and flags. Founded in 1809, the cemetery was initially intended for the poor, orphans, and soldiers, but later it became the burial place for prominent figures in science and art, national defenders, and politicians.

Near the cemetery is the Peter and Paul Cathedral - a bright example of Baroque style with rich interior décor and sculpted stucco.
