About

Locals refer to the island of Lucavsala "behind its back" as the Latvian oasis, highlighting its green "exterior" and compact size. By the way, the island is indeed miniature-two kilometers in length and eight hundred meters in width.

Lucavsala came into existence right after special dams were installed to control the turbulent waters of the Daugava. The "progenitor" of the Riga oasis was the island of Jumpravasala, which merged with smaller "relatives" located nearby. The soil of Lucavsala is mainly clay, which doesn't stop Riga's residents from cultivating their gardens here, resting as if at a resort in neat private houses. The shore of the island is adorned with a monument to Russian soldiers who laid down their lives here during the Great Northern War.
