Lucavsala came into existence right after special dams were installed to control the turbulent waters of the Daugava. The soil of Lucavsala is mainly clay, which doesn't stop Riga's residents from cultivating their gardens here, resting as if at a resort in neat private houses. The shore of the island is adorned with a monument to Russian soldiers who laid down their lives here during the Great Northern War.
