About

The Abbey of Saint-Denis is second in importance to Parisians after Notre-Dame de Paris. For many years, it served as the burial site for French monarchs, and moreover, the cathedral is one of the earliest architectural structures built in the Gothic style. Constructed in the year 625, the abbey long served dual purposes as a church and a defensive structure. This latter circumstance led to frequent reconstruction and restoration of the church. Few people know, but it was on the territory of Saint-Denis that a new architectural style emerged, later called the "architecture of light."
