About

The Powder Tower became one of the few fully preserved fragments of the defensive structures of Lviv and one of the 17 towers that were part of the city's fortification ring. The tower is a monument of Renaissance military-defensive architecture. Its location (on the defensive rampart behind the second line of fortifications) was determined by the need to protect the eastern approaches to the city. It was also used for storing ammunition and gunpowder during wartime. When the hostilities ceased, the tower housed grain reserves. This three-story semicircular building is constructed of rough stone. The lower part of the tower has long been hidden from view by the raised ground level over time.
