About

One of the main jewels of the famous Market Square is St. Mary's Basilica. The exterior of this monument is a prime example of Gothic architectural style in Poland. Its facade is adorned with two towers of different heights, with the taller one having been used as a watchtower in case of approaching enemies or fire outbreaks. This building is associated with many beautiful legends, for instance, the legend of the trumpeter. According to this legend, in the distant fifteenth century, a trumpeter noticed an approaching enemy and sounded the alarm, but was killed. In memory of this event, a signal known as the "Hejnał" is played hourly in all four cardinal directions, audible throughout Poland thanks to radio broadcasting.

One of the most beautiful basilica I have ever seen. Went there 15 minutes before the tourist entrance opened, but needed to leave to buy ticket. The ticket office is right on the opposite site of the tourist entrance. The price is no longer 15 zł, it's now 18 zł so prepare your cash accordingly; you can pay by card though. The ticket office is very small that only 5 people can enter per round, so you'll see the long line in front of the office. I highly recommend going there early right when the gate opens as they will some kind of opening ceremony thing around 11:45-12:00. I had no clue about it but felt lucky to witness it. There're 2 entrances: prayer and tourist. I recommend paying for the ticket and be close to the front.
