About

Erected in 1597 following the grand plans of the Jesuit monastic order, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul deliberately stands right in the city center. It exists to attract attention, to turn it solely towards itself, and to evoke awe and wonder in tourists. At the entrance, lined up in a strict row, stand the majestic figures of Christ's disciples - the 12 Apostles. Locals joke that the church is too "small," necessitating the placing of statues outside. The magnificent facade, the high dome, and the inherent Baroque style of this place command a reverential respect and even fear. The severe and rich decoration of the interior houses bas-reliefs depicting the crucifixion of St. Peter and the execution of St. Paul, as well as statues of Polish saints. Noteworthy too is the choir chapel, along with the old organ and a Foucault pendulum, which is longer than its counterparts throughout Poland. As a visual aid, it often attracts students and, of course, tourists.
