Luogo antico splendido ricco di storia

È una delle più belle chiese di Genova, e una delle più importanti testimonianze del romanico ligure. A pianta basilicale, ossia a tre navate, venne eretta nel primo quarto del XII Secolo, utilizzando spesso materiali di reimpiego romani per le colonne e i capitelli. L'edificio è ricchissimo di dipinti e affeschi. Da citare almeno la pala d'altare di Pietro Francesco Sacchi (1485 - 1528) raffigurante la Madonna col Bambino circondata da santi, realizzata nel 1526; il Polittico dell'Annunciazione, dipinto prima del 1469 da Giovanni Mazone (dopo il 1453 - tra 1510 e 1512); e infine il Polittico di Santa Caterina (1475) realizzato da diversi pittori dell'epoca. Consigliatissima anche la visita dello stupendo chiostro, in cui è presente il bellissimo affresco del maestro tedesco Giusto di Ravensburg, realizzato nel 1451 e raffigurante l'Annunciazione. Un grazie speciale va ai volontari che permettono di visitare il chiostro e tutti i locali facenti parte del complesso monumentale.
