About

The "Golden Rider" statue is a dedication to the most famous ruler of Saxony - Augustus the Strong. The monument was designed by the sculptor Ludwig Wiedemann, who completed his part of the work in 1734. A French architect took on the challenge of realizing the design on a real scale and completed the construction within a year. The statue itself was unveiled in 1736.

The "Golden Rider" is aptly named, as it was originally gilded with amalgam. However, after restoration work, it was gilded with gold leaf. But this in no way affected the appearance of the sculpture, which remains one of the most striking landmarks of Dresden to this day.

Despite having survived several major wars throughout its long existence, the "Golden Rider" has remained untouched by devastation. The secret lies in the fact that the locals cherished the statue so much that they would dismantle and hide it in a secluded place whenever it faced the greatest threats.
