About

Nicolaus Copernicus "reigns" on the throne of knowledge and science opposite the Staszic Palace. The bronze statue from 1822 is surrounded by inscriptions of gratitude from compatriots and the Homeland. In the scholar's hands are tightly held the astronomical instruments of those times, while his gaze is thoughtfully directed into the distance. The monument was funded by contributions from the pockets of ordinary citizens, although the philosopher and scientist Stanislaw Staszic contributed the main part. During the war, the sculpture was taken away by the fascists to be melted down, but something went wrong, and the Poles managed to save the monument. There are two identical copies of this artwork in the world - in Montreal and Chicago.
