The Museum of Contemporary Art was opened on April 26, 1979, and is part of the Museum Quarter, with a special focus on the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. The museum's collection includes about 9,000 contemporary art exhibits: paintings, sculptures, installations, drawings, photographs, videos, films, architectural models, furniture, and much more. The building also houses a cinema room, created by artist Heimo Zobernig, where the connections between visual arts and cinema are showcased. The contemporary art museum building was designed by the architectural firm "Ortner & Ortner": it is shaped like a cube, faced with volcanic rock, and features several underground floors.
