About

Karlsplatz is one of the most famous landmarks of Vienna. It got its name from the Karlskirche (St. Charles's Church), located in the south-eastern part of the square. Besides the church, the square is home to the Technical University, the Vienna Museum, and the Künstlerhaus with an exhibition center and cinema. There are also two pavilions from the former Vienna railway and monuments to the composer Johannes Brahms, the sewing machine inventor Josef Madersperger, and the inventor of the screw propeller Josef Ressel, after whom a park in the square is named, by the way. Every November, one of the best Christmas markets in Vienna opens here, where craftsmen display their goods, and in the evenings, magicians and jugglers perform.
