About

Near the sprawling Mirabell Gardens and along Schwarzstrasse, which intersects with Getreidegasse, stands the famous Paracelsus in a thoughtful pose-a seeker of the philosopher's stone, slightly an occultist and much more a talented physician. His bulky and ponderous figure, with an open book laid out on his knees, seems as though it might any moment shake off the dust of ages, revive in spirit, and instantly heal what is beyond the reach of contemporary doctors. When the plague, with its insane and deadly visage, was cutting down the Austrian population, and the holy inquisition fell silent, lost for words, it was Paracelsus with his unconventional approach to treatment who halted the terrible scourge. The monument, of course, was erected many years later, as if in a belated recognition of the famous self-taught doctor's merits, who still found no peace.
